Writing with AI—Friend, or Foe?

The October meeting was a delightful surprise with Carla Groenewegen’s introduction of Chat GPT and exploring the idea of using AI to write about the Teachings of the Ascended Masters. She demonstrated the tool with multiple examples and provided tips on how to create searches to ensure the information obtained is specific and accurate.

Can AI help you in your writing?

In her presentation, Carla shared how quickly she changed her mind once she used ChatGPT in her current work as a writer for a marketing agency. In her demonstration on how to use the tool, she encouraged the Guild to explore ChatGPT with specific parameters to support our writing.

What is ChatGPT?

According to Wikipedia, ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a large language model-based chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched on November 30, 2022. It enables the users to search and create text to a desired length, format, style, level of detail, and language.
There are two versions: 3.5 and 4. Version 4 is the most advanced, but only the 3.5 is free (and slower!) Chat GPT has access to everything that is digitized and readily available. It does not have access to protected information, nor is it guaranteed that it will access the latest material.
Chat GPT is programed to never repeat itself, which prevents the potential for plagiarism. The searches conducted belong to the user. It can do non-fiction articles, fictional stories, book outlines, poems, and songs, etc. when prompted with the proper set of instructions. All in all, it provides a good first draft for the skilled writer to massage into a masterpiece.
One weakness of this tool is its inability to find, mention, or provide citations.
